About Durango, Colorado

Whether you come to Durango, Colorado for a scenic ride on the historic Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge railroad or you’re using the vibrant town as jumping-off point for explorations at Mesa Verde and the Four Corners area, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Durango combines the best of “college town” with “mountain town” so you’ll find a hopping nightlife-music scene plus opportunities for rafting, climbing, skiing, snowmobiling and outdoor adventures in the rugged San Juan mountains – with all the guides, services and shopping you need to support your outdoorsy activities! Plus, there’s a scintillating arts and culture scene, which owes much to Durango’s position as a gateway to many of the Native American tribes of the Southwest.

Durango has been a Colorado vacation destination since the early 1900s, and it’s been a “railroad town” since its inception, two defining characteristics that remain true today. The city was founded by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Company in 1880 to serve the mining boom, but while the city’s gold and silver wealth proved as precarious as elsewhere in Colorado, its true wealth – its natural splendor – has endured.

Located on the banks of the scenic Animas River, against the jaw-dropping backdrop of the San Juan Mountains, Durango offers everything a visitor could hope for: vacation amenities, family activities, outdoor recreation, fabulous dining and shopping, comfortable lodging and affordable conveniences – plus lots of memorable photo ops.
