About Durango, Colorado
Durango, Colorado has been a vacation destination since the early 1900s, and it’s been a “railroad town” since its inception, two defining characteristics that remain true today. The city was founded by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Company in 1880 to serve the mining boom, but while the city’s gold and silver wealth proved as precarious as elsewhere in Colorado, its true wealth – its natural splendor – has endured.
Located on the banks of the scenic Animas River, against the jaw-dropping backdrop of the San Juan Mountains, Durango offers everything a visitor could hope for: vacation amenities, family activities, outdoor recreation, fabulous dining and shopping, comfortable lodging and affordable conveniences – plus lots of memorable photo ops.
The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad continues to draw crowds year-round, as does opportunities for hiking, biking, mountaineering, incredible nature photography, skiing, snowmobiling, kayaking and more. Its proximity to the World Heritage Site, Mesa Verde National Park, and other archeological highlights of the “Four Corners” area make it a delightful home base for adventures in Southwestern Colorado. An added bonus is the energy and cultural and educational opportunities provided by Fort Lewis College, which makes its home in Durango.
